The Cradle to Career Pipeline

One of the most destructive effects of poverty is how deliberately it funnels children into the criminal justice and child welfare systems. The harm caused by interactions with these systems damages generations, reinforcing cycles of poverty and violence.

The antidote is the cultivation of powerful and undeniable alternatives that set children on pathways of opportunity, creativity, and freedom.

These alternative pipelines require an interwoven continuum of people, services, and sectors that deliver comprehensive, enduring, and effective guidance and support at all life stages. Communities raise children, which is why our cradle to career work adopts a whole-child, family-centered, and community-informed approach to well-being.

Early Childhood Equity

Nurturing a healthy, happy child begins long before conception and birth. It starts with enabling prospective parents, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to provide the kind of life they want for their children. It also requires investing in a family’s larger care network of child care providers and caregivers, teachers and schools, health and development experts, among others.

Data clearly outline how 1) meeting children’s needs during their earliest years is a major indicator of future success and 2) investment in programs and policies with an emphasis on young children are effective anti-poverty solutions. Nonetheless, this sector remains underfunded and underresourced, struggling to meet the costs and demands of raising a family in today’s California. We integrate an early childhood lens across our policy and advocacy agenda because a vibrant California requires robust investment in our youngest residents.

Place-Based Strategies

Each geographic area, whether that be a neighborhood, city, or region, is distinctive, facing challenges and opportunities that require bespoke strategies and solutions to grow and thrive. Instead of implementing one-size-fits-all solutions, place-based strategies meet people where they’re safe, energize local leadership to think and act boldly, and rely on the expertise of the people who know their homes and communities best to lead these efforts. Targeting both a community’s immediate needs and the underlying systems that impact outcomes long-term, children and families are placed on a journey of economic mobility.

We celebrate what makes each community unique and help implement innovative anti-poverty solutions that account for the diverse needs of each community and its cultural, political, and historical context.
